Disneyland trip October advice needed

We are planning on doing the pilgrimage out to Disneyland for our first time after 8 previous visits to WDW to see what all these West coasters keep shouting about and pay homage to the original park. Now I've become a bit of a pro for avoiding queues at WDW but I'm a novice when it comes to the California parks so I need some advice from the pros.

We will be arriving on wednesday october 4th and staying for a week, what days will be less crowded and are there any events or things I need to consider that might boost the queues?

In fact any advice is more than welcome we were thinking 3 days at disneyland and possible Knotts farm visit then the rest in LA with a trip to Universal thrown in terms mix.
