There is a thread at the moment on laptops at Walmart http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=150071

Circuit City and Best Buy are also good places to look at. If you google them and have a look at their prices you will find them better then in the UK. Depends on what spec they want but basic laptops or Notebooks as they call them can start at as low as £150.

First of all US warranties are only vaild in the US,you are only allowed to
bring in goods to the value of £ 145 each, this figure cannot be totaled
together.

we bought a laptop whilst we were over there the last time in 2005 and infact its what im typing on now! we brought it back as hand luggage and had no problems. The warranty is only valid in the US but if anything goes wrong it can be repaired anywhere you just have to pay or go back to the US within the year (what an excuse that would be! ) we purchased a toshiba from curcuit city (i think) and have had no probs with it at all it has lasted much longer than the vaio that we bought here in the uk!

Not exactly true you the warranties can be bought from Best Buy that are worldwide. My I-Pod bought in the US was fixed under warranty here so it depends on the company.

As for the £145 it is not the value of the goods you are allowed to bring into the country, it is in fact the the value of goods you can bring back tax free.

Hi... got our laptop from BestBuy, when you buy it from them you get a very very limited amout of software, i had to buy windows and norton security and they then take it to a workstation who load it all up and test the pc before you leave the store... worked out about £450 with warrenty etc.
