Thanks everyone. Off to read the trip report and maybe buy a book or two. I do love the Gulf Coast so maybe we will spend slightly longer there. Also a good idea maybe to fly into one airport and out of another.

I definitely think flying into Miami and out of orlando would benefit your trip and reduce the driving so more time to explore. There are some fantastic places on the gulf coast my favourites being Marco Island and Naples. I didn't really like fort Myers and I've just got back from Sarasota and visited Anna Maria and siesta key both beaches are absolutely stunning.

We loved every part of it, although at times it felt like we spent too much time on the road, but overall a great experience and glad we saw more of Florida.

Think it's your 2011 holiday?
Although I have just enjoyed reading about your 2010 trip, patiently reading each day, waiting to see when you headed away from Orlando...then realised I was on the wrong trip report!

Ah yes of course. That's a sign of old age that. All these trips get muddled in my mind. Still I got you to read two trip reports rather than just one

Some of my best trips in the States have been the unplanned ones. We plan at the moment because we have small children but BK (before kids) I did several trips with a friend or my now husband and loved just seeing where the road took us. There are so many places to stay in America you never have to worry about being homeless for a night and there's nothing like finding some mom and pop diner for an evening meal. One of my best Florida memories was a very random barbq place we found off the beaten track somewhere on the west coast of Florida; in the meantime a friend and I had a fab night in a middle-of-the-nowhere place somewhere north of Washington DC where we drank cocktails all night and were chatted up by every man in the bar - most of whom had never spoken to an English girl.

Having said all that, I like Fort Myers Beach, Anna Maria Island and the Coconut Grove area of Miami. Fort Lauderdale is ok but slightly souless. I love Pompano Beach but that's because we have relatives there so it feels like home.

Have you thought about hiring a motorhome? We've done it twice and loved it - apart from the places you stay at it's great when you're travelling from one place to the next to just pull up at a nice spot on a coast road and make some lunch or a cuppa.

We pretty well covered both coasts doing that. It's not cheap but well worth doing.

Hmm, I've just sold it to myself again now Maybe next year...
