I am a long term photographer, I go back to the days with a dark room and enlarger. I could only dream back then of what we have now. my first digital, the photos were so fuzzy.
I have had a number of good SLRs and the problem is they are so bulky, unless you are serious about turning everything into a photography outing, you end up leaving it at home. The good thing about this is it even fits in my short's pocket and it has a huge zoom lens on it for the size, fully stabilised. With the larger sensor compacts, the results are really fantastic nowadays.
The other options are the equivalent Canon (no 4k) and Sony (more expensive, 4k cuts off at 5 mins due to overheating issues).
The other Panasonic camera is decent but doesn't have as good sensor I don't think and the zoom isn't as good- I looked at it myself when buying this one. I'd recommend, if the budget can be stretched a little, going for this one for the extra £100.
I got mine refurbished off Panasonic's own website- it seemed to be new.
Thank you again for the really useful advice (particularly concerning the Sony's, we actually were looking at one of those today).

My daughter happily carries her bridge camera, which is quite bulky, with no complaints virtually everywhere she goes. However, with a DSLR it's all the extra equipment to carry too which is why I think she will choose a compact this time. I will post back on here when we get the camera so everyone will know what we finally decide ☺

When you know what camera you want, have a look on camera price buster, it tracks all prices on all major sites, I always find the cheapest prices on there. If you do decid to go second hand can recommend mpb have used them a few times with great results

Thanks again everyone, we found the camera for DD today and bought it (at last 😀 ). She decided on the compact with 4K video recording. We visited Jessops in Cribbs Causeway, was helped by a really good young salesman Jacob, and DD chose the Panasonic Lumix Tz90eb.

Retail price was £379 but Black Friday weekend price was £349 plus we can claim £30 cashback from Panasonic in 35 days time so felt it was a good deal. She just can't wait til Xmas to use it now 😀
