If it is fresh you have to cook it. I would imagine this was smoked salmon which you would not need to cook.

Smoked salmon is usually in slices, a bit like ham, and you can eat it straight fro the pack for sandwiches or recipes - it kind of looks a bit oily and a bit translucent.
Cooked salmon is a lighter pink, flakey and opaque, and can be in larger flat pieces like cod, or thick steaks in a horseshoe shape. This is usually bought raw to cook at home (looks more oily and deeper pink and a bit translucent), but you can buy it ready cooked from the supermarkets. You can also buy it tinned and ready to eat. Best thing would be to go to a large supermarket and ask the fishmonger for advice - they'll be able to show you the differences, which will be a lot easier than my random descriptions! |

When I was pregnant with DS I craved smoked salmon and used to pop to the supermarket for a packet or 2, then open it in the car and stuff my face. DH detests it and couldn’t stand being in the car after me because it stunk of fish
DS loves smoked salmon and has since he was little but I think I must have sickened myself by eating so much |

You can buy packs of offcuts which are cheaper.
It’s healthy too!
