Its just a jump in time, commonly seen in films, TV and theatre shows. A bit like that bit in Lion King when Simba goes from being a young lion cub to a fully grown lion in a minute or so (and whilst midway through singing Hakuna Matata).

yes i understand that but they turned into middle age so it was a huge leap!..I think the younger guy that played his partner should have been the main lead with the acrobat as his wife!

No, you are not alone - I felt the same and it's not a film I'd watch again. Mind you, I didn't like La La Land either...

I don't think he was supposed to be middle-aged, at least not throughout all of the film. He was supposed to be around 30 years old when he came back to marry Charity and then in his early 40s during the Jenny Lind tour and finally in his late 50s by the end of the film (Barnum didn't set up a tented circus until he was 60). This roughly matches actual events - although it should be noted that the movie is a fictional representation of Barnum's life.

So, do you mean that you thought Hugh Jackman didn't look in his early 30s in the beginning part of the movie? Fair comment, although I thought the make-up artists did a reasonable job. I'm not sure Zack Efron would've worked for the latter half of the movie when Barnum is supposed to be in his 40s and 50s.
