We don’t hire a car which is really why we stay onsite, we’ve done LBV and idrive without a car and it was a hassle (and expensive). We either ended up waiting around for shuttles or paying for taxis (in the days before Uber).
It really depends what you will be doing onsite. I know some people crab the Disney transportation but in 4 onsite stays we’ve had issues less than half a dozen times - I understand I will have to stand at busy times so I don’t class that as an issue. The worst was at AKL last year when we waited, along with about 100 other folk, for the bus to AK. The CM was getting a lot of grief. Then 3 came at once - was like being in the U.K. lol. If you want to go shopping at the outlets you can get the bus to Springs then a taxi from there - much cheaper than from hotel. Universal however is difficult on the bus and expensive in a taxi. |

We always have a car because we fly into Miami. We didn't use it last time but this year we have EMH at AK and there's no way I'm getting to the bus stop for 7am to get there for opening - it's just not happening! So having eh car enables is to get up a bit later and drive to AK. We want to visit AKL after as promised my dd we would so we can drive there too. Saves hanging around for buses. I wish we used it a bit more last time as would have made life much easier as we had quite a few long wait for buses especially after evening magic hours! The best thing is you can use it if you wish - its good to be able to have the option!

I always find a car is a great addition even when staying on site. The Disney transportation is good but its just the waiting for the bus that I always find hard. When I get in the car I feel I'm closed off to the open world a bit like you are when you get back to your hotel room. You have finally not got the hustle and bustle of the parks and you can just regain your thoughts.
However, whether you have a car or not you have so many options with Uber that even without a car it will not stop you doing something. It really is just personal preference and cost. |
