more Scotland advice - Oban and Inverness

Just to add to the Scotland debate

We have changed our plans to drive to France and have replaced that with a bit of a UK tour.

The plan is to start somewhere between Kent and the borders for 1 night,
the 4 nights in Oban, 4 nights in Inverness, 1 night in Stirling to catch up with family, a stop in Dumfries for more family and then drive back down to the Lake District for 6 nights before home.

We like AirBnbs but there doesn't seem to be anything I really like so we have found Mackays in Oban which looks amazing.

Any suggestions as to how to spend our 4 days - must dos and restaurants - or do we need longer?

Any hotel/accommodation/restaurants recommendations for Inverness? I was there for 2 nights in lockdown (working) so unfortunately didn't really get to see or do much.

Thanks

Inverness favourite tearoom has to be Girvans (if its still there) up near M & S. Fabulous cakes 😍 always a queue!
Favourite spot for dolphin watching was Channory Point on the Black Isle.

Inverness means a mandatory trip to Drumnadrochit to see nessie... stunning scenery.., i would also go down to Aviemore and venture up into the Cairngorms, finally the Battlefield in Culloden.

Personally, i would also fit in a distillery tour, there is a great one on the Hill overlooking Oban Bay, not far from the famous McCaigs Tower that dominates Oban.

Enjoy, its all outdoors, so very low risk

Gosh we lived in Nairn for 10 years but never ventured far west of Inverness! If you are happy to drive then there are some hidden gems along the A96. Logie Steading and Randolphs Leap near Forres, Spey Bay and the Baxters factory near Fochabers. Down the A9 to Aviemore then there is Insch Marshes and Loch Garten, Carrbridge - for the bridge! and Landmark Forest Centre (if you have children!).

Personally I would head further North for stunning scenery and beaches. You've come so far, don't miss the best bits .

We will be driving - I suspect my bottom will be car-seat shaped after 2 weeks of a road trip

Where would you suggest?
We currently have 4 nights in Oban and 4 nights in Inverness booked.

I have done the Applecross road as a child - my dad was working on an oil rig in Kishorn!

We’ve just come back from a week in Inverness and had a great time. We booked an apartment (Silver keys) on kings street through Booking.com and it was perfect location, Tesco 2 mins away, some local restaurants and 10 min walk to town. Here is what we did...

Day 0 drove from Newcastle to Leith and stayed a Premier Inn.
Day 1 drove up stopping at Forth bridges view point, Perth and Pitlochry. Explored Inverness town.
Day 2 drove north to Dunrobin castle, looks like a fairy princess castle and has a falconry display. Lunch at Loch Fleet nature reserve with a view of seals playing, falls of shin for the salmon leap (saw loads, much better than Pitlochry salmon ladder).
Day 3 Cawdor castle, Fort George (closed) but amazing sparkly stones on the beach. Lunch at Nairn beach then Culloden battlefields Incl highland cows by car park, Clava cairns and Culloden viaduct.
Day 4 fort Augustus for Nessy boat trip, Invermoriston falls, Loch Ness exhibition centre, Urquhart castle (closed) Beauly Priory (closed)
Day 5 Brora beach, Sinclair castle at Wick, John o Groats, Dunnet head, thurso, Dornoch
Day 6 wander round Ness islands and Inverness (Weather not great and tired after long day before)
Day 7 Chanonry point dolphin watching (1 hour after low tide best time to go, we saw loads), Rosemarkie beach cafe, Fairy Glen falls woodland walk and rope swing, Fortrose cathedral, Munlochy Clootie Well, Robertson’s larder farm shop incl highland cows and alpacas.
Day 8 drove home.

Edited to add restaurants we struggled with - lots were still closed and those that were open had reduced seating so were fully booked and we couldn’t get in or had reduced menu which kids didn’t fancy.
We ate lunch at the Turkish in town which was lovely.

Edited at 11:29 PM.

This is AWESOME - thank you.

As a result we have amended our stay to 5 nights!

Glad it was useful. Hope you have a great time. We found navigating with google maps the best way to most beauty spots we visited from Inverness. A lot have postcodes on line which are obviously the nearest house or whatever and not actually the place you want to be. We put postcodes into sat nav but when we got close, used google maps instead.

If you get chance to do Pitlochry, just North of Perth up the A9, you must see the Salmon Ladder, its fascinating.
