Never happened to me and I have sometimes paid 7 times in a week.

I don’t believe this to be true...we have had the VA card for 3 years, and pay every transaction off instantly. If I spend £5 at the co-op, when I get home I transfer the money over and pay it off. Every time I spend, I pay it off immediately. There has never been any problem with this, and it works very well for us. We have enjoyed 3 companion vouchers and about 350k of reward miles since we opened the card 3 years ago.

If you don’t have the cc with an annual fee I believe that the companion ticket can only be used for a points purchased flight in economy classic not an upgrade

Do not forget that 120,000 points *could* get you a First class return to Tokyo via ANA.

90,000 gets you Business return.

The T's & C's are exactly the same, according to the website, for reward vouchers earned on both cards :-

You can choose a reward from:
Companion Reward Ticket. Take one person with you in a reward seat:
If you’re a Silver or Gold member when you book the companion reward seat won’t cost any points.
If you’re a Red member when you book, the companion seat won’t cost any points in Economy Classic and Premium, or you’ll get a 50% reduction in the points needed for Upper.
Upgrade Voucher. Upgrade any booking by one cabin into a reward seat. Available to all tiers.
Clubhouse Pass. For one person to use in any Clubhouse worldwide when flying with Virgin Atlantic, Delta or AFKL International. No additional guests can be permitted. If you’re a Gold member, you’ll get two passes.
