Credit card advice
Hi,
My fiancée’s credit rating is not too good. Not terrible just average. We have heard if you get a credit card it will boost your credit score but will hurt it if refused. Is this true and to what extent if refused? We will be looking to get a mortgage in a year so want to be in a better place credit score wise. Any help would be appreciated. |

There are credit cards that do a soft search (won’t affect score) to see if you’re eligible or not. Can’t remember which though, have a google. That way you’ll know before you apply properly.

Bank account credit cards might refuse but higher interest ones, like capital one (I think that’s what it’s called), might give one.
Can built up credit rating then switch. |

I use Clear Score to keep track of my credit rating. The app is really good and gives recommendations on how you can boost your rating.
You can also do a soft search for credit cards, it gives an eligibility percentage and lists any that are pre approved. Money Saving Expert is also a really good resource for choosing a card and details all of the different types and current offers etc. You can get credit builder cards which are designed to help those with lower credit ratings, a lot of banks do them, the limit will be lower but might be worth looking into 😊
