The Girl in the Picture - Netflix
Anyone seen this?
It’s really stuck with me So disturbing! The main question I’m left with is - Why didn’t her parents do more!?

We watched this last night and I thought the same. Particularly the dad. Mum seems to have had mental health issues but dad just gave up on her?

Exactly! Even if your circumstances mean you cant look after her at the time, surely you’d look for her afterwards at some point in the following 18 years knowing she had been taken by a strange man

Yes the documentary and family seemed very forgiving of the father and disparaging of the mother. I’m sure there’s more behind it all given it was quite short for the length of the story, it was all very disturbing. I wouldn’t have watched it if I’d known what it was about tbh, but once started wanted to know how it ended.

Watched it last night, so sad, seemed like everybody knew something was wrong but nobody acted on it. Her poor son too, the way it was casually announced he shot him twice in the back of the head - they should be doing everything to find him so at least he could be buried with his motger.

I read Matt Birkbeck's book 'A Beautiful Child' a few years ago and it always stuck with me.
I was pleased to see the documentary. I have since read his second book, 'Finding Sharon' and it goes into more detail about her parents. I don't have many good thoughts about her mother and I don't think we will ever get a good enough answer from her. I can see how the father lost touch, due to the actions of the mother. But, he still could have tried to track them down later. I'd highly recommend reading both books. Some things that were missed out of the documentaries are covered in the books. I'll never forget this case. So sad. |
