No hotel is going to refuse you an upgrade if there is availability. That is the issue though, if you leave it until arrival there might be no availability. If you want it, I would try to upgrade before arrival.

Gosh, it’s expensive for a standard room isn’t it ? £1800 for three nights next August. It was $800 for three nights in 2018 when we last went.

Booking.com is coming out cheapest for us next July but can only add 4 guests. Am I right in thinking you can add another person to the room at check in ?

I think (and hope) that’s correct. We have another adult coming with us and it was proving difficult to change through travel republic but contacted the hotel direct and they said to add on at check in. $35 extra per night in club level for this September

Think we're going to go with Booking.com and use quidco, and treat ourselves to club level for a night! I'm really quite excited to stay here, hotel looks gorgeous.

We have done both and have not had issues with either. This year for HHN I booked via Booking.com early because I suspected rooms would be challenging to get.
