Sounds great. I always find they rely too much on pineapple, mango and coconut at that restaurant. I know it's 'Caribbean' but ... maybe jerk chicken or curry goat?!

Evidently Captain Jack didn't make an appearance, which is a shame, he does tend to pop in during 'normal' times.

Food was good when we went, but the 'darkness' spoiled it for me; a bit like eating at San Angel Inn in Epcot - torches required!

Definitely needed a torch for reading the menu!

Troisieme jour

Yesterday was our Bistrot Chez Remy lunch, which as I mentioned in the first post, was the restaurant I had been looking forward to the most. We turned up just over ten minutes before time be told that we were too early and to go away. Never mind, we had spotted that Ratatouille single rider queue had a five minute wait, so we decided to do that first.

When we returned, there were about fifteen people (maybe five parties) queued up, the person on the door now didn’t believe we had a reservation and it was all a bit of a kerfuffle to get in. When we finally entered the premises, we had to wait inside for a while and we’re then escorted to a table that was off to the right in a sort of conservatory and had no view of the decor which was the main selling point of Chez Remy to me. I therefore declined the table and asked to be seated in the main restaurant, which was accommodated.

There are four set menus (for adults) to choose from, two three course menus and the same menus but starter and main only. We both opted for the slightly more expensive of the two course menus. We picked the same starter of duck pate, the other choice in this menu was soup of the day which was pea (food of the devil IMO) soup today. For main course Nev picked the steak cooked rare and I decided to go with the vegetarian ravioli. Both meals include a side portion of ratatouille.

The starters were brought out in that very quick way that reminds you that you are in a mass produced food operation. I hadn’t even put my napkin on my lap by the time the food arrived. No worries, the plate was slammed down on the napkin whilst it was still on the table.

Everything about the pate again reminded us that it was mass produced, probably shipped in vacuum packed as it was served. I did quite like it though, the red wine sauce it came with was very nice too.

Onto the mains and Nev said his steak was well cooked and was tasty, but he said it was a very strange cut steak, it did not have a uniform shape and size, it was like a weird hunk of meat. He said his chips were like ore bought oven chips. Similarly, I would say that my pasta was like supermarket bought stuffed pasta. Which I do not mind and indeed eat from time to time, but I do not pay €50 for it.

We thought the food was pleasant enough but €50 was far too much to pay for food that had largely been bought in and warmed up. I am glad that I visited this fun, interesting restaurant, but I would never be able to justify a second trip.

What a shame. We've eaten many times at Remy and usually it's the best steak we've had at DLP. It does sound like they are having supply issues at the moment, just like everywhere here I guess.

Our lunches have always been leisurely (maybe too leisurely) and our server last time was so fun. We tried our rusty 30-year old school French, and he pretended to be impressed and challenged us to do the whole meal in French. Which we did, probably badly, but he was very encouraging!

We have had decent steak there before but think they’re cutting costs as last week it was like shoe leather and yes, was definitely not a steak type shape!
Wouldn’t eat there again as it’s just not good value for money.
We ate near Notre dam last Tuesday for less and the food was 100 X’s better!

Or even, much closer to home and some lovely restaurants, Val d’Europe. Walking distance from DLP is one of my favourite restaurants there L’Interprete (think you like that one too Gill?)

Claudette I am a big fan of Captain Jack’s (well, it’s predecessor, I’m sure it had a different name) and we have had a few lovely meals there over the years (lovely in the context of other DLP restaurants). I’m glad it was better and improved your day (I would be asking for a ticket refund too).

I would have been quite disappointed with your Remy experience.

Onwards and upwards hopefully!

Nev liked the taste and cook on his steak, as he had it rare maybe less opportunity to turn it into shoe leather. But it was him that brought up the weird shape of it, which does suggest that cheaper cuts are being used. The price of his meal, with his weirdly shaped steak, is probably less galling than the price of my meal with the shop bought pre filled pasta!

I would go back to Captain Jacks, although I would probably skip the starter next time as they were too big and we didn’t need them.

Only one more day left now, although two days to write up as I am running a day late.
