I loved the Marina Beach Motel. The Castillo Inn is another option that also has patios, kitchenettes and free breakfast. Both are under $200. Over that I looked at Eagle Inn and Hotel Milo. There are more budget motels and chains up along state street but I liked being close to the beach and in summer I found the price difference wasn’t all that much anyway.

Thanks all for your comments - Santa Barbara sounds like a winner! We’ve already booked Harbor House Inn for 1 night, so I’ll probably change that to 2 nights and forget about Pismo (which we hadn’t booked anyway).

Second the recommendation for San Simeon for the elephant seals, truly unique experience!

We stayed at Harbor House Inn 2 years ago and loved it, it is in a brilliant spot in a quiet road but really close to the beach and just round the corner from State Street. We have booked it again for 3 nights in October, can't wait

We use Santa Barbara as chill out time, it's a beautiful place with good shopping and eating places, nice to sit on the pier with a bottle of wine and just watch the waves. Solvang is also a good place to visit and wander round not too far from Santa Barbara. We just spent a couple of hours wandering round Solvang last time we went but are staying overnight this time so hubby can take advantage of all the wine rooms.

Sounds great. Thank you. I’d heard about a famous bakery at Solvang and how quaint it is, so we’d planned to stop for a look around. The wine rooms sound ace!

Here’s the Santa Barbara wine trail.

Solving is cute. I prefer Carmel up beside Monterey but Solvang is worth an hour or two. There’s another cute town beside it Los Olivos which has wineries, bakeries and it looks just like Disney’s Main Street USA.
