Ooh just remembered another one “ reach for two but take one, there’s no need for gluttony” from my mum , her parents and her grandparents too.. it was always spoken as a reminder to watch our manners at Sunday tea even though I baked the darned breads and biscuits myself.

I remember so many of these!
If the sky was getting dark Dad would say ‘It’s as black as Dick’s hatband’ - I never knew who Dick was.
If we made a poor effort at something we’d be told “that won’t set the Trent on fire”.
And the answer to all the Why? Why? Questions was:
Y’s a crooked letter and Z’s no better.

Just remembered another of my Granny's, if we said '' But I thought"she would say '' well you know what thought did, stuck a feather in the midden and thought it would grow a hen''

My late grandma use to say "if wishes were horses how far we would ride"

Grandmas often say the wisest things

My Granny used to say that and if she found a penny etc at bottom of her voluminous hand bag she was display it and say “many a mickle maks a muckle” and kiss it ! (she was from the Borders - my Mother from Sanday and later m Edinburgh would shake her head so maybe a Gala saying )
