Declaring medical history for holiday insurance

Hi all,

I am looking at holiday insurance for our trip to Florida next November and it is asking for medical history. It says one of the conditions you must declare for is depression, which I have been diagnosed with and currently taking medication for. However, whilst I have been diagnosed, I have never had compulsory visits to the hospital for it and would never cancel a trip due to it etc. I am actually doing quite well in myself aside from the wobbly days every now and then!

Do you think it's worth me being honest and acknowledging it and paying extra or should I just tick the no box for conditions?

Yes you 100% should be honest. They don't have to pay anything if they find out you have lied. It's unlikely to add a significant cost to your insurance if it has never been a problem before either.

Insurance contracts are in the utmost good faith - as the poster above says, you need to be scrupulously accurate and honest or risk a claim for any other issue to be refused.

Yes, declare everything. You may have a slight increase in your premium but its worth it for peace of mind.

Yep. I would declare it. If worst case senario you have a breakdown on hol and something happens, they would avoid paying out if they found out you were medicated!

Thanks for the advice everyone.

One further question - can it be amended? Since I'm not going until November 2018 I am hoping I will be off medication etc. by then.

Definitely declare everything. I have cover through my bank account and last year I told them of a minor heart problem and I was covered at no extra cost.

Yes, it can be amended. In my case, my condition became slightly worse and they raised my premium but not by much. I'd already informed them that I was awaiting the results of a test that could lead to further treatment and medication and it did.

Thankfully, my holiday passed off with no medical problems at all.

Always keep the insurance company informed of developments. If your condition improves and they raised the premium, they may well reduce it if they consider that you've recovered sufficiently.

Always declare everything, if you had to claim they would look for any loophole not to pay out !
