Fed up with VA!
Like many others, our trip to WDW this year has been rescheduled to 2021. I've been trying to rebook my flights, and the return date window for Virgin Atlantic opened yesterday, so I duly filled in the online form to transfer my booking.
Today I get a call from a very cheery young man, who tells me that this is now all booked, but that (predictably) there is a small increase in the price. I grumbled a bit as I said VA had cancelled my flight, not me, so I shouldn't have to pay more, but go on, what was the small increase. (And bear in mind I've already forked out just over £1474, for the middle tier economy seats, but including the extra £240 for the exit row seats - DH is 6'4" and freaks out when people recline directly in front of him, banging into his knees unexpectedly). He told me it would be £364 EACH extra! I did my fruit, and he explained that this price pushes us up a tier on the way out and into premium on the way back, but did not guarantee us the seats we had already booked and paid for, which he offered to refund off the new price. I declined and asked for a refund, and we then discussed this for a good 10 minutes, with him claiming that the government had cancelled the flights, not VA, and my countering this with that didn't count, the cancellation email had come from VA not Boris. Honestly. I finally agreed to give it 48 hours, and he promised to call me on Monday, as he said the flights had only just been released and the price may well come down. I only agreed to wait because I am hoping he will have a word with someone more superior and severely discount the new price. I don't mind paying an extra £200 or so, but there is no way I'm forking out another £600-odd for this. (Until I realise I don't have a choice because the parking and hotel at Manchester airport are already paid for and the Disney bit is already booked so we have to get there somehow!)

This is why I would demand a refund- they have you over a barrel otherwise.

If it’s release day the price is always high with Virgin. After a few days it becomes normal.
I think you’re looking at late September? You really shouldn’t be paying more than £400 each for economy flights. Ask for a refund and keep an eye on the prices yourself. |

This was always going to be the problem with a credit note (as well as the risk of the company turning turtle, which is possible). In that case, you would simply be a creditor in a very long queue of creditors.
When my BA flights were cancelled in March, I insisted on a refund in order that I could book the best deal next time without being tied to any individual operator. I booked with AA for August as even though one of the legs was operated by British Airways, they were considerably cheaper. I could do this as I had not tied myself to BA. When my flights with AA were cancelled by me in August, I insisted on a refund for exactly the same reason. When I booked for next August, British Airways had the best deal and therefore I was able to book with them as I had not accepted a credit note from AA. It is no secret that thousands upon thousands of VA customers are holding credit notes and therefore are absolutely certain to fly with VA next year, whatever the price as they need to use their voucher. As long as the price increase on VA is not greater than the actual price charged by competitors, then VA know that they will get the business. VA have demonstrated with the demise of TC and now the issue of refunds, that they have morals lower than a Pythons knackers and it is for certain that they will exploit their position in order to steady their sinking ship.

I am not sure if I am reading it correctly, but the extra price includes an upgrade? Doesn’t seem too bad if so, although if you don’t want an upgrade, not sure why he doesn’t price u what you want.
It is normal to have to pay any difference in price though, just as you would expect a refund if it were cheaper. |

Im guessing your dates are similar to mine and i found that economy was ridiculous, there wasnt much difference to go for premium so we got a good deal booking that
