Does anyone not pre book seats on the plane?

We've booked with Thomas Cook airlines for next July/August and as yet have not paid the extra to have seats together on the plane. We are 2 adults and our kids are 16 and 18 so will effectively be classed as adults too. How likely are we to be sitting together if we don't reserve our seats in advance do you think? Has anyone got experience of not booking in advance?

Thanks for any help or advice you can give. I obviously realise there are no guarantees if we don't pre book.

We never bother. flight out 2weeks ago were sat together, flight back we had 3 seats together and one couple of rows back which was fine by my husband as he just reads for the duration.
Felt sorry for those who had paid to select seats as on both flights there were people who had done this only to find they were switched at last minute. They were being told that the staff apologised but couldn't do anything there and then to resolve the issues.

For the first time ever I caved in and paid to book seats together on our outbound flight to JFK with Thomas Cook. This was partly because we were a large group (8 of us flying together), partly so that I made sure that I could sit next to DD8 and partly because we were flying out to celebrate DD15's b'day and DS and his fiancées wedding so we wanted to be able to celebrate. We chose to sit in 4 x 2 by the window.

However, we didn't book our seats for the return journey as it was a night time flight and I figured we would be a asleep for most of it anyway. We were still seated together, although across the width of the plane (2 + 4 + 2).

Made me wish that we'd saved the money and not booked for either journey - I certainly wouldn't bother in future!

Never have and never will. We like to go away a few times a year and only once have we been split up (Thomsons to Cape Verde). It is not the end of the world for us as we just watch films and do little conversing on the flight anyway.

Thanks for the replies. I'll keep my eye on seat availability then and try to hold my nerve! Probably not the end of the earth if we aren't together.

We flew TC this summer, 2A, 2C 13,15. Did not book seats, but did check in at Manchester about 3 1/2 hrs early, just to make sure we were together. Offered us 2/2 or 4, chose 2/2. Return flight, offered 2/2 again. Was worried before we flew, but kept my eye on the seat plan and it was only about half full a week before we went so didn't panic!

This is reassuring as we didn't pre book seats when booking yesterday!
