SMAX brought these back without problem on our last visit

Personally I haven't heard of anyone actually being stopped and I think this is just another one of those things that Social Media latch on to and exaggerate, then the so called 'Journalists', sensationalise the story as they know it is good "Click Bait"

If anyone is worried, just empty the contents out (it's just normal coke/Sprite) and pull off the top, it's just an empty round plastic bottle then. Plus they are only $5 so not like losing a $200 lightsaber.

I really think this is a "Non-Story"
I did see something official posted by the TSA though about refusing these .

I agree that social/news media tends to exaggerate and sensationalise these things. However, it still remains the case that they have been officially banned by the TSA. That's not exaggeration.

Have they "Officially" been banned?
where is the TSA statement banning these exact items.

I know they replied to a question on twitter saying something along the lines of replica explosives are not allowed, but have they actually stated that the Star Wars Coke bottles are specifically banned?

I can't see it on their official list here

They are plastic right? Stuck the round bottom but In your carry on bag and the plastic top in your hold luggage, or vice versa, then they don’t look like a replica explosive, just a round bottle and a strange bit of plastic...
As above it’s not overly expensive if it does get confiscated though? Just don’t try to bring back loads of them in one suitcase!

“Even with a normal bottle cap, this item is still considered a replica and is not allowed in carry-on or checked bags,” a tweet from TSA said.

The TSA have officially stated that a GE Coke bottle "is not allowed in carry-on or checked bags".

Yes. See above.

It's been reported in lots of places.

That is just a news article the same as a news article on the DIBB,

You are saying that the TSA have officially stated...

I'm asking where is that statement, I don't mean some news article that some journalist has written, I mean the actual official statement from the TSA.
