Getting Excited

We got an Australian labradoodle in January last year, amazing dog in every way. Doesn’t shed a single hair, temperament is amazing, very clever loyal dog, grooming is crucial especially puppy fur but a she’s got older it’s less of an issue, never had such a calm, relaxed and happy dog. Equally happy to go for a 5 mile hike through streams and hills as to lay on the sofa and relax.

We will never even look at another breed again, the breed is genuinely perfect for us as a family

We got Digby on pets4homes from a lady who bred her family dog, definitely not a farm. Pre covid he was £1250.

He costs £45 at the groomers every 8 weeks and regular brushing. We need to bath him whenever he gets muddy. He's so needy and he's like a little shadow.

But he's patient, intelligent, funny, friendly, happy, won't let you cry without licking your tears and is excellent to train. He's our best buddy and I honestly think he's the best dog we could have asked for (given we couldn't pass the checks for a rescue dog).

It’s a risk with cross breeds. My brother has a cavapoo and that sheds as well. I’m so allergic to it.

We got our dog as a pup, he’s an English bull terrier. They do get bad press but he is a softee! We saw advert on website, and emailed , the lady wasnt a breeder or puppy farm, we told her about us, there were 12 other people ahead of us for 2 pups, after we visited she said we could have pick of the 2 remaining ones. We saw pups and mum together several more times as we visited every weekend until we bought him home. Its so hard to make sure its not a farmed pup, but doing homework on breeder does help and i think a genuine person would want to know alot about where their pups are going to. We keep in touch with his ‘other mum’ on his birthday and christmas and send photos.

The cross breeding of a cocker spaniel and a poodle does not guarantee a non-shedding dog. Neither does a cavalier King Charles spaniel or a poodle. Spaniels are shedding dogs so crossing with poodles - there is no guarantee- it will be down to the gene pool of your puppy and the percentage it has of poodle (which is non-shedding).

As well as non-shedding, you may also want to consider whether you are going to have a working cocker or a show cocker. Working cockers are more energetic.

I would also consider what activities and what sort of dog you want - matching it with your family requirements. When our boys were little, we did lots of cycling - we had a English Springer as our family pet who was just fantastic - she ran through the fields as we roamed and cycled. Downside - she did shed but the good side - amazing temperament and personality and did not bark at all.
We now have cross-breeds (Westiepoos) - both parents are non-shedding so we have no hair loss at all. They can be a little yappy at times, but not too bad. We walk them twice a day but they certainly wouldn’t cope with hours of exercise/cycling.
Cross-breeds - two pedigree breeds crossed together.
Mongrel - a mixture of breeds of more than two.
Good luck with your search.

We always wanted a dog but due to work it was too much of a commitment. With working at home were tempted again but as you say prices are crazy.

I'm thinking give it six months and unfortunately there'll be a good few dogs that'll need good homes. So we're holding off for now.

Sadly I think your correct , very soon when half the country isn’t sat at home all day and they realise how much dog walkers cost there is going to be a big realisation.

To answer the op, please look for a owner breading for love, we had 1 litter so we could have a pup from the same line then spayed her.

Yes that’s the thing with cross breeds never know what you are getting. I’m a groomer and I have a few poodle crosses that she’d like mad, even just massaging in the shampoo the hair comes out in clumps, also have a couple that are the funniest looking dogs where you can see the silky coat underneath with wispy hair on top but they are lovely dogs and to me that all that matters. I have one golden doodle and he is absolutely gorgeous he looks like a golden retriever with almost red gold coat. The only thing poodle about him is his hair crimps behind the ears when wet
