Dog worming solutions...

We rescued our shih tzu last year. Whenever we have wormed him since having him he’s been able to smell the tablets and hates them but the first couple of times we managed to get him to take them in cheese. However, it’s now got to the point where we open the packet and if he’s in the room he gags at the smell. Honestly, I have never seen a dog gag before but he actually does!

The last two times we’ve tried to give it him we’ve tried to cover it up with EVERY food possible. We have given up with that after trying to give him the tablet yesterday when he was honestly traumatised by the idea of eating it. I felt so sorry for him. We’ve also tried to crush it which just made it worse. I’m aware this sounds ridiculous and you’d think you could fool the dog into eating it but we can’t and I hate how sad it makes him.

We aren’t looking for more ideas of what to hide the tablet in as this just isn’t going to work and we’ve tried everything already. So, does anyone have any other worming treatments to recommend, like a paste or even just a tablet that’s more like a treat? We have been using drontal tasty bone up until now which is the one he finds revolting.

Panacur paste is good. I think it's usually used for puppies, so you might need quite a volume of it, depending on the weight of your dog, but it would do the trick 👍🏻

Looks like it will dose a 9kg dog, I'm sure your doggy will be under that?

I don't worm my dog, I worm count, it basically involves sending samples of poo to a lab, they look for evidence of worms. Obviously if it came back positive I would have to treat, but so far 3 years and she had had nothing (and she is a spaniel, so eats everything on walks - even poo) - as a preventative/natural treatment you can feed crushed pumpkin seeds, Diatomaceous Earth, rabbits ears with fur on, Verm X (look and taste like dog treats, sold on amazon) - good luck. My previous dog would not eat for 3 or 4 days after 'finding' a worming tablet in her meal, just incase it had another tablet in. Must taste vile

My dog is the greediest on the planet but I could never hide drontal in anything , he would eat the food and spit the pill out.
We changed to milbemax, which I think is now milpro and he has no bother taking it. Just crush in some nice food he doesn’t object.

My Shih tzu is exactly the same and the only wormers I can get him to take are millpro . He doesn’t notice them at all and I just put them in his usual food . I have tried others before and used any tricks I could (cheese , ham etc ) but millpro are clearly the best for him
