Direct or Indirect

so, we are looking to go back again, last time we did direct from dublin, however it seems to be a lot cheaper going indirect dublin-JFK-orlando or dublin-ATL-orlando, short enough transfer times of 1 hour 35, BUT we will have cleared immigration in Dublin, will we make it or we do need a longer layover? thanks

I�m assuming you would book the indirect connecting flights together on a single ticket, because on separate tickets you would be pretty unlikely to make the connection with checked luggage, and even with only hand luggage, you have a lot of risk if any delays.

On a single ticket, it depends on the airline combination. I�m not familiar with ATL, so others can confirm, but I�m guessing both flights would be on Delta, so it�s likely to be enough time.

At JFK, if it�s 2 Delta flights you should again be fine, since it will either be same terminal, or you can transfer airside between terminals 2/4 if needed, without having to reclear security.

With other airlines at JFK, if the connection is same terminal, it will be ok, but if it involves a terminal change, that gets tight, since you can�t transfer airside between any terminals except 2/4. So, for example, an Aer Lingus to JetBlue connection would be all in T5, so easily doable, an Aer Lingus to AA connection would require a landside terminal transfer and reclearing security at T8 (though any checked bags would be transferred automatically on a single ticket).

Of course, the above all assumes no significant delay on the transatlantic, though for same terminal transfer at JFK (and probably ATL, though others can confirm), you�d likely still make the connection with 30-45 minute delay on the long haul. On a single ticket you�d be put on the next available flight if you missed the connection, all comes down to your personal attitude to risk and how much it would stress you if a connection were missed.

Hi we did Atlanta 4/5 yrs ago and the airport is very big. Our flight was delayed from Dublin but they put us on the next flight and we only had 1.5 hours, tight but ok. Luckily we got a little bonus, as there was just 2 of us and a family were trying to get put together near us we offered to move which the steward appreciated and moved us to first class. 😀😀😀😀😀

Have a look at going through Philadelphia or Toronto, both very good.
