Booking return flights

Do a lot of people book their outward flight when it becomes available then book the return 2 or 3 weeks later when that comes out

Is it more expensive to book 2 separate flights than return flights

Just been through all the maths of it myself. I've opted to keep the two single flights as I had two companion vouchers and wanted to apply both. You can't use two companion vouchers on a return flight.

A lot of the difference in taxes between singles vs a return depends on what class you fly in. However, VA will allow you to convert an outbound one-way to a return to save on these taxes (which is great provided you don't want to use two companion vouchers)

Yes we have 1 companion flight available. 2 adults going.

Do you have to contact virgin by phone to book the outward flight or can you book it online then 2 weeks later contact them to convert it to a return using the companion reward

I would give them a call as they can make a note that you want to call and convert it to a return in 2 week's time. You can't apply the voucher online - it has to be done by the call centre. It took me 40 mins to get through to Flying Club on Wednesday evening at 5pm.

Ok thanks for that. These companion flights can be a bit of a minefield

I know with reward flights you can book the outbound and then add the inbound at a later date, it saves about $150 for 2 people.

Can I ask out of interest what’s changed your mind about using virgin again?

I have 80,000 points and my wife has some also plus a companion flight.
Part of me thinks to hell with virgin but the other part says 2 adults with miles and companion can fly to Orlando economy out and upper class return for £403 each

I don't think you'd have enough points to do that?

Not sure how they would apply a companion voucher if flying in different classes there and back. Assuming you are flying off-peak, they may perhaps charge you 60k for your return ticket (12.5k out, 47.5k back), your partner's outgoing may be 0 miles, but you would have to pay 50% of the upper class mileage back. You'll possibly be 8-9k miles short

Don’t blame you Mike,

If you do t have enough points for UC, see if the companion can be used as an upgrade for PE, as you would only spend 22,500 for a PE one way.

The Virgin staff are really helpful

Was trying to get an idea of costs so I priced up a flight for us both in June. I think it may be comparable to sept

This is the details the virgin rep worked out
