We always have food with us to eat at the airport and on the plane (kids not fans of most of the plane food) and it’s always been fine. About an hour before we land we sort out what we’re allowed to take into the US and what we can’t. We declare what we can take in on the customs form then either eat the other stuff or throw it away.

This is good to know do you have to declare it or does it just get scanned in your hand luggage

Just to take it to uk airport and on the plane you don’t have to declare it. You only declare what you are taking into the us (off the plane).

Slightly off topic lol but we had the beagle stop us in MCO last year as we'd taken sausage barms to eat on the plane. Obviously there was nothing in the bag when we got to MCO but the beagle must have been able to smell that they'd been there 😂 his little face looked so happy that he thought he'd found something 😂 the lady asked us what had been in there, then gave the beagle a treat anyway 😂.

Just be aware that some food can fall into the gels category - so, taking sandwiches is fine, taking a jar of peanut butter could get confiscated, similarly marmite (doubt you were planning to but just mentioning). Pretty much there's no problem taking food into the airport and through security.
