Disney Reports Record 3rd Quater Earnings

inline imageThe Walt Disney Company reported third quarter earnings, which are a record for any quarter. 2014 sees an 8% increase in Revenue over 2013 figures with $12,466 Million.

Parks and Resorts
Parks and Resorts sees an 8% increase from $3,678 million to $3,980 million and segment operating income increased 23% to $848 million. Operating income growth for the quarter was driven by an increase at the domestic operations, partially offset by a decrease at Disneyland Paris. Parks and Resorts results include a favorable impact due to a shift in the timing of the Easter holiday relative to the fiscal periods.

Higher operating income at the domestic operations was due to increased guest spending and higher attendance, partially offset by higher costs. Guest spending growth reflected higher average ticket prices for admissions at our theme parks and for sailings at the cruise line and increased food, beverage and merchandise spending. Higher costs were driven by MyMagic+ and labor and other cost inflation, partially offset by lower pension and postretirement medical costs. The decrease in operating income at Disneyland Paris was due to higher operating costs, decreased attendance and occupied room nights and lower special event revenue, partially offset by higher average ticket prices.

“Our strategy of building strong brands and franchises continues to create great value across our company,” said Robert A. Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company. “This quarter we delivered the highest EPS in the company’s history, and we’ve now generated greater EPS in the first three quarters of FY 2014 than we have in any previous full fiscal year. We’re extremely pleased with these results and we are also thrilled with the spectacular performance of Guardians of the Galaxy, which holds great promise as a new franchise for our company and once again reinforces the tremendous value of Marvel.”

Not surprised about the drop-off for DLP.

Having been there last September, we were disappointed at a number of things. Hotel (New York) was needing attention, especially the bedroom. In the parks there were so many attractions and restaurants closed due to staff cutbacks (apparently).

Made us look forward to Florida this year even more.

I would love to go to Disneyland Pairs but everytime I price it up, it always seems so expensive that you might as well just save that money and go to Florida. I guess the news reports about it being cheaper for people in France to book didn't help.

Has DLP ever made a profit? Or broke even? Just as a curious question.

Don't think so because of its complicated financial structure - however, it is still pulling in the crowds. Re the New York hotel - it is closing for a year for a complete overhaul. The Sequoia Lodge hotel was refurbed a year or so ago and is gorgeous.

As for doing DLP cheaply, it's perfectly possible - pop over to the DLP forum and many of us will be glad to help.

Our next trip - staying in the Disneyland Hotel which is the equivalent of the Grand Floridian - is costing £1,200 for 4 nights including tickets and breakfast, and Eurostar is costing £138. You just have to know when/how to book!

Anyone can book through any country's website to get the best deal. We always get the 4 nights for 2 offer and go in the week when it is cheaper.
