Just wondering if anybodys child has done this before? Taking daughter to her 1st session on Wednesday & not sure what to expect really. It certainly sounds good.

My daughter went to Summer School last year at the University of Surrey. There is certain criteria to apply and she had to write why she would like a place. It lasted from Monday to Friday and was residential and included all food etc. DD really enjoyed it and they did taster sessions on some of the lectures etc and also practise mini multiple interviews which other universities use.
DD is hoping to study at Surrey this September as she has a conditional offer there.

That sounds great!
The residential is for Year 12s I think, she'd love to do that when she gets to that age too. |

Thank you. Yes she is but is still at secondary school so has a while yet. We know how much competition there is for uni places so hoping things like this will give her an advantage (however small!).
I hope your daughter is enjoying it x |

Now is the time to get planning as it’s a long slog to get onto a vet med course. You have to get all the work experience done approx a year before the course starts as the UCAS deadline is the October which is earlier than the other courses (except for medical). The vets gets booked up quickly for work experience - my daughter had to book some the previous year to get in some. Also be prepared for your daughter to travel (or you drive her) to get to the placements as there were a lot of our local vets that either didn’t do work experience until age 18 or were full.
Lambing is a big one to tick off. There is a website called the Lambing List where farmers advertise places. DD found a place about 20 miles from home and lived in - she basically worked for her keep. She really enjoyed it and it was an eye opener to say the least.

Thanks ChoppyGirl that's all really useful info!
We/she are definitely thinking ahead as she's still got 4 years to go. But the more I read into it the harder it seems so we really want to give her the best chance. She's got these days at RVC & hopefully the same next year too, hoping to get a 2 week work experience placement at a vets in October then we have an animal hospital she'll be volunteering at as soon as she turns 16. Thanks for the lambing website. I'll definitely take a look. |

Other relevant work experience can be gained by volunteering. Cat protection, dogs trust and riding for the disabled are all good experiences. It’s not possible to have too much x
