Is this the norm?

Sorry had to ask as I have never noticed it before but at school this morning the kids were taking in presents for the teachers.

I take a gift at the end of a school year but never at any other time...
I feel a bit bad now because I didn't take anything.

I have never really seen gifts given at this time of year to teachers or known it to be a thing...Maybe I have been living under a rock lol

My daughter always took a Christmas gift for her form teacher and assistant, just a token gift really the nicer present if that makes sense was end of school year. She started comp in September and hasn't taken a present this year and hasn't written any cards cos it's not cool 😎😎 according to her? , it's cheaper for me so I'm not complaining lol

Mine always took them at Christmas and end of year in kindergarten and primary. Like Sam said, they didn’t want to take them at senior school as it wasn’t the done thing although there was a class collection for the form teacher for the first couple of years

I thought it was normal to give teachers Christmas presents, based on being friends with some primary teachers in the past.

We have a class collection at our school - that way the teacher (and TA) get a voucher for their favourite shop and we don't have to worry about it.

My mum used to buy our teachers a little present at Christmas and the end of the school year when I was at primary school and that was 30 ish years ago! I think it's been a common thing to do for many years.

My MIL was a dinner lady and she used to get lots of flowers and chocolates from the children at Christmas and end of term too.

I would be the opposite to you. We never gave gifts at the end of the year but did at Christmas. Something small.

Looks like I have been living under a rock lol
They are in primary... they moved school last school year and I didn't really pay attention because I had a lot but in their old school no-one took a present.
I had so much going on last year I wouldn't have noticed anything so maybe it is the change in school that makes the difference lol... It's not something I did as a child either

We have always given a small Christmas gift.
But I wouldn’t stress over it, I am sure most teachers don’t expect anything and are just grateful for the time off x

Unfortunately it is the norm as if there isn't enough stress deciding what to buy people. When my children were at primary you would often see parents arriving on the last day with gifts at the end of the school day and sending their children back in with them. So if you are feeling guilty you could perhaps take a box of chocolates in with you after school. Having sent many gifts in with my 4 children through their primary years only one ever sent a thank you card which came through the post and I thought was lovely.
