It's a good result but I hope those that have been campaigning for this for a while are not overlooked.

Northern Ireland are now trying to source funds to continue to support children over their summer.
Great this is being done, sad it took people to stand up and demand that children do not starve. |

Who could fail to be happy at this result?
Our Governments are adhering to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, an agreement to which the UK Government is a signatory. This Agreement states that if a child’s family are unable to provide food and shelter to that child, then your government is required give assistance. It does not state that there needs to be a public campaign to force governments to do this. Having governments say, “We have decided not to let children starve this summer” is not a result. It is a disgrace that it was ever a consideration. My father was raised in abject poverty, his experiences were horrific. I could not comprehend how that could have been acceptable in this nation. For children still to be starving in this country is a failure of our society. Today should not be seen as a celebration, but as an opportunity change how we regard and treat children in poverty. |
