anyone travelled indirect with kids aged 5 and under
We have booked flights edinburgh-gatwick-mco for next year. Now starting to worry weve done the wrong thing as our our children are so young age 3 and 5. Had anyone gone indirect with small children? Any tips ?. What did you do with your buggy if you took one?

We flew loads with our kids under 5. Not always easy. The youngest (babes in arms) are fairly easy, but they get harder before they easier.
The strollers go to the door of the plane where they are taken to the hold. When you get off you pick them back up at the door.

First time my daughter was 12 months old. Kids are very adaptable. We didn't see the buggy from when we checked in until we got to MCO.
Biggest tip lots of things to do small presents, I pads full of videos and lots of snacks! Make an adventure out of it. |

Yes, we did in 2012, ours was LHR-ATL-MCO our DS was 5. We took a netbook with some films and some things like top tumps & the Usbourn dry wipe card games, he was fine with the flights and slept most of the way back.
We didn't bother with his buggy, we managed to break it when we were in Tresco earlier in the year and I wasn't going to buy a new one at that age; so we just hired one in Disney. it was a god send and not too expensive; after 1 day I found it a bit much walking around Epcot in August with him laying across my shoulders. If I had to do it again, I would do it slightly differently and hire a buggy earlier apart from that I wouldn't change anything, he loved it!

Getting Excited
|
We did this route with a 3 and 4 year old and survived! My tip would be to keep the kids separate on the flight (sitting 2 & 2). Mine were ready to kill each other by the time we arrived! We didn't need a buggy for the airport so hired one out there from Kingdom Strollers. It was delivered to our hotel and the best £100 I spent!
Our next trip we have decided to pay the extra to go direct but if the only option was a 2 leg flights I wouldn't hesitate. |

yep we've done it and doing it again next week (although i might be cheating as mine are now 6 and 4)
non stop screen time wihtout me saying stop was pretty good. the stop worked well for a stretch of the legs then onto the next plane. we set their expectations that it would be two planes and kept some things back for the second plane on the way out so that they had new stuff to look at |

I would never do indirect with kids that age, however as the connection is in the UK it somehow feels like it would be a bit easier and stress free as the 1st and last segment is so short.
Cant you extend the layover to include a overnight stay ?

We've flown indirect ever year with kids as young as 4 months, it's straightforward enough and the break from flying is welcome. We try to dove tail our connections fairly tight so that we're not waiting around but that's easy enough for us to do because we fly from Dublin so we don't have to wait for immigration.
Bring plenty snacks, colouring bits, play doh and a book, they'll think it's an adventure! |
