United Airlines hurricane Ian

Hi All, I’m wondering if anyone else had flights/flew with United Airlines during the hurricane? United cancelled our first flight home from Orlando to Washington and we ended up staying 3 extra nights in Orlando to ride out the hurricane. I’ve submitted our receipts with united to claim back our food expenses ($230 for 2 people for 3 days) however they won’t cover them stating they aren’t legally obliged to and won’t budge from $100 each united credit as a “gesture of goodwill”, granted it does cover the majority of our spends but it’s forcing us into flying with united again. Ive since tried to claim back our food bills with the travel insurance but they won’t cover it stating the airline covers those. Has anyone had better luck with United and getting them to cover food bills?

The problem is there no legal requirement for US airlines to offer you anything like there is in the EU/UK, it is up to the airlines themselves.
