This is not totally true.. as this graph shows.
![]() ![]() You can clearly see the dip in 2016 and the periods both before and after. We were at 1.45 prior to the Brexit announcement and it subsequently plummeted to 1.22… before rising again. Since the Brexit announcement , it has recovered as high as 1.42 and is currently around 1.3. Brexit does not conveniently explain away the rising costs in the USA at all, it is but a very small factor if at all and in any case, the pound had been on a slide against the Dollar lasting many years before the Brexit result.

If the first year they went was 2016, it was a crap exchange rate after June.
The exchange rate will always fluctuate, but it's never been decent since they started going in 2016. They've never been when it was $2 for £1 etc. That's the only point I was trying to make. *I can't see the numbers on the graph. It's too small and I'm partially sighted with scar tissue in my eyes. Yes it did.. but as the graphs show, it has been as high as 1.42 since and even now is at 1.30.
It was only 1.45 before that Brexit slide.

We’re here at the moment in a villa & publix is our nearest supermarket - we’ve commented several times it seems very expensive & wondered perhaps if others might be cheaper - but for convenience, they’ve reeled us in !

Aldi or Walmart would definitely be cheaper but there are some things I like at Publix (their fresh salsa and own brand ice cream) so buy them there.
If you go to Aldi and don't have a quarter for the trolley pop inside the shop and they will lend you one. I think the phrase they have in the shop is something like "Lend a quarter to save you money". |

Myers I echo the rest, we've been going since '92, back then you were getting +$2/£ & AYCE breakfasts were .99C,lunch $1.99 & Dinner $6.99- now 2 takeaway pizzas will set you back $50=£40 but at 2/1 thats a £15 difference IYKWIM A 3 week holiday for us is the equivalent of 6 months groceries here.
I'll go one "better" in 2004 a 21 day Disney pass was £196! 3 weeks free dining at CBR was approx £2k,you'd be lucky to get a week in a Value for that now ![]() Clothes, trainers etc are probably cheaper here, it's just the stuff that you can't get here that's hard to compare. SD ![]()

I miss the clothes shopping. I worked in an office and would get a whole new work wardrobe every year. Also too many pairs of jeans and trainers.
The bargains just aren't there anymore. Edited at 04:47 PM. |
