Last year the prices dropped when the AA and Aer Lingus flights were available on the BA codeshare.
We booked ours last year on the 9th Sept for £5,300 - 2 adults, kids 16, 14, 12. Indirect flights on BA codeshare with 16 night RPR Club level. Exactly same for similar dates next August at the moment is around £9.5K. I'm watching prices with a 2019 West Coast fly-drive in mind. |

Another thing I did when monitoring flight prices - and apologies if this is incredibly obvious - was to build a few different itineraries on Skyscanner, Google Flights etc. specifying a mix of direct and indirect flights, dates, airlines I would travel with etc. I then signed up for email alerts and created a Gmail account just for that purpose. I downloaded the Gmail app for my iPhone, put it on the front screen. Every time there was a Gmail alert, I knew instantly a flight price had changed. I could then check the email to see what it was.
I did this in combination with my Expedia account where I saved a few itineraries to my "scratchpad'. Each day, I checked the Scratchpad and could quickly see at a glance what had changed over a number of different flights/dates. The email alerts vary by service - some email you daily, some only when a flight price actually changes, but if you combine these with your own daily routine of manually checking things, it becomes very easy to build a picture of the prices for your dates, the trend and whether or not it's time to go for it. |

I think it depends how flexible you can be in terms of dates and airports. We needed to be back for Alevel results this year and wanted to go for 3 weeks do we're limited for dates to a day or so either way.
We are now booked - £2,100 for 5 of us Manchester to Boston and Miami to Manchester return which I was happy with. I kind of had a budget of about £400 pp I was working to and £100 over that for 5 people was ok. Set yourself a budget and book when you see something then don't check the glitch threads EVER! Lol! Good luck.

£1600 2016, £2100 2017, £2500 2018. This is what I have had for 2 adults 3 kids for the past 3 bookings, all with BA direct and a car thrown in with no extras to pay. So deals are to be had but as others have said , book it when you see it, I missed out on Sunday morn as price went up when I was filling the form in, luckily found another route just a few £ more expensive. Be prepared for indirect too. 2016 for me was the Jersey MIA glitch, this year direct Heathrow Mia, next year via Philly out Heathrow back but all return to Manchester so better for me. All these dates first two weeks August
