Hertz are legendary for this in the US, and sometimes the difference can be dramatic.

It's not logical, but it could have been a special offer for a week when the rental for 5x1 days was much higher.

The argument used in discussions on US travel forums about Hertz is that logic doesn't come into it, it's all about the contract you entered into. Do something different to what's on the contract and all bets are off.

Just an update on my original query...

We dropped the car back last Friday morning (3 Dec) and as expected we were charged for the full rental period so no problem there as it was our choice to return the car early.
The only additional charge on top was the $15 early return fee plus some tolls that we had accumulated. All in all it was a great service from Alamo Brits and we would have no hesitation in using them again.

Oh and just to note, we were NOT asked for the Orlando Brits guide and/or british driving licences...our Irish ones worked perfectly for my husband and myself, as the additional driver.

How "early" was it returned? as we were thinking about returning ours to DCCC the evening before it was due to be returned (due 9am following morning which is our day of departure).
