You can only book a placeholder when you are ON a cruise, not before. A placeholder costs $250 and it's basically a booking valid for 2 years that you can then change from a placeholder to a real booking once you know what cruise you want. You receive some on board credit and a 10% discount with a placeholder (there are some restrictions to this).

Your choice as a newbie is to wait until the itineraries come out and are open to new bookers (a few days after frequent cruisers) then call up (the wait will be long) or book online on the day the website opens for bookings.
We have our US TA book ours on the day of release .. she sits on the phone for hours so I don't have to!

You'll be paying a 20% deposit and you'll need to specify which cruise you want. Add all of the people in that you think will be with you (even if you have older children who may drop out) - that way you all lock in that days price.
If you decide in a few months that you want to change, you can for no charge, but the new cruise will be at a new price, not the same as when you booked your original one - make sense?
If you want to cancel, you can get a full refund if you book direct or through a US TA - not through a UK TA (no refund if you book concierge ok)

Hope that helps

Joa
Which travel agent would you recommend booking through? We are keen to book early and get the best price but my son is only 16 days post transplant and I am aware that things could change so I like the idea of booking with a US agent and being able to move or change our booking if needed.

Useful info thanks.

Budget is the main consideration for us so will keep an eye out ready to book as soon as available. Hoping to manage a 4night rather than 3 but happy to compromise with an inside cabin!

Travel on a Dream, often referred to as ‘TOAD’ on the DIBB are popular with DIBB cruisers, I have had a quote from them and the customer service levels and knowledge are great. Plus the fact that they don’t hold on to your money but pay the cruise line directly gives an extra level of reassurance. There is usually some on board credit given too which is always very welcome! I hope you get your holiday booked, I’m sure you all need something to look forward to after all you have been through as a family.

We use Travel on a Dream. When you go their website, you can choose your agent .. I would recommend Debs (our agent is not taking on any more clients) - Debs is great and will help you completely.

Hope that helps

Joa

p.s. Don't forget that you can also change things etc if you book direct. The bonus of the TA is that they sit in the phone queue etc and can sort things out if things go wrong. Up to you what you prefer.

I am liking either the Northern Europe on August 18th or the fjords on the 25th dependent on the price.

Can I just ask (as a complete newbie to DCL), is there a big advantage to booking on release date? Do prices rise significantly as time goes on? I'm thinking about Europe in May 19 but not sure we'll be ready to book next week (haven't even discussed it with DH yet!).

Also, is there a way of getting an ideas of prices before booking day?
