Following as also curious about this and if this still happens when the car hire is pre-paid for? Do you still need to have a swipe of credit/debit card? Thanks

"Ring fenced" is actually the wrong expression. Ring fencing is the corporate procedure for the protection of assets i.e. the money on the card in the event the card issuer goes bust.
en.wikipedia/wiki/Ringfencing The procedure you are referring to is called "Authorisation Hold". Where a set amount of money is blocked out on the card for possible future charges. en.wikipedia/wiki/Authorization_hold Personally I always use my Credit Card for this purpose as it is not charged anyway and has a decent credit limit. So an authorisation hold is not going to affect my ability to use the card. |

I have just come back from Malta and they took 1400 euros off my card at the hire desk. It was then refunded when returned.
I need to know for Florida as I wont have that kind of "free" money... |

I always use Alamo either via Brits or Virgin. Pre pay and never have had a hold put on for any amount on my card.
In fact I am in SSR now and just checked my Barclaycard before paying it and there is certainly nothing showing on there.

Thats an INSANE amount of money.
From what Avis have told me, from what i have booked though BA, which was a group B car (focus) $200 will be secrued on my card, but as i have already upgraded (mustang) the extra cost of $218 dollers would be added. So around $418 on my card on hold which is about Ł270 pounds. But then again ill get there and be totally different. Hence what i wanted to know what others have had. |

thats the norm in Europe.
if you do not take out the full insurances with the hire company the usually put a hold on the cc. ive had up to €2000 fr bigger cars. drops off as soon as you return car. between alamo and dollar (since 2001) i can remember once haveing a $1 hold |

Tom, how did you find the OLCI experince this time around?
perhaps you could pop a thread about it - would be handy for those who have booked this method and going shortly only if you have time of-course
