'IF' you have an accident in your hire car!

Maybe sounds a bit silly but what do you do? Ring state trooper or sheriff? Ring your hire car company? Contact your own holiday insurance company (or only if anyone is hurt?) asked my hubby this and he wasn't sure what to do and he's the driver so thought I'd ask the experts!

Depending on where you are. Firstly ring FHP or the Sheriff, then the hire Company as you will need a new car brought out
Finally take loads of photos - if innocent!

We had an accident in our car. Our car was wrecked by an 80yr old driving a double cab pick up. How we got out I don't know. It was in the middle of nowhere but there was a sub station of some sort nearby who heard the noise and all the Emergency Services arrived. The police took statements from everybody and we were totally cleared and given a written form saying so. That's when the fun started. We rang Alamo and they said tough your not getting another car. The police examined our insurance an confirmed we were covered and rang Alamo themselves, stating that we were tourists more than 100 miles from Orlando. Still tough, they were horrified. They arranged Police transfer to get us back.
The next morning we had phone call from Alamo saying they were bringing a car to the hotel, they had had a senior policeperson phone them !

bear in mind that after a bump they can refuse to supply you with another Car. It's in all their T & C's. Probably only applies to those who have been proven to be reckless though

Thanks for the advice I hope we never need it but I just like to be prepared and I am a bit of a pessimist!

We had an accident a few years ago outside Epcot. A local reversed his huge pick up into our hire car. Disney security were there within minutes, we exchanged details and I phone Alamo the next day who sorted it all over the phone. No police, no Sheriff, just swapped details like you would here.

Sorry if this is a silly question but should you always get a police reference number? Is there a number other than 911 that you would call?

When the police document the accident they give you a copy of the sheet so you have all the details. When we were rear ended a few years ago the police officer rang the hire company for us and told them he would wait until they brought a replacement. It arrived in 20 mins
