Certainly from a UK perspective the Midlands is in the south. I suppose you could argue Cumbria, Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire were in the north of the UK along with Scotland.

Manchester would probably be in the "Midlands" of the UK. When you look at a map, Manchester is in the middle of the UK and not in the UK's north. But it is just about in the north of England (which is why when we say "north-west" we mean "north-west of England").
All about perception still - not a map view!

Yeah, I know. But I tend to have a rough mental map of the UK in my head so it does affect my perception.

Also, I do feel some people in England have a tendency of discounting Scotland or thinking Scotland is a lot smaller than it actually is. Poor Scotland.

I am in Hertfordshire, so pretty south, although technically we are in the region of East of England. Just because somebody lives to the north of me, doesn’t mean they live in the north of England, be it make it either region of North East or North West.
I did say I know that Nottingham is Midlands and I also know that just because it’s north of me it’s not North of the country, I said up. The reason I said “up” is that I’ve heard many people say we are coming up to Devon etc when they actually live further “up” the country than Devon.

North starts at the Thames, and stops at The Scottish Border.

Scotland then has it's own North and South...

The geographical centre of the UK is Haltwhistle, Northumberland according the signs up in the town

assume they include the shetlands etc as its almost at the scottish border so quite far north

Anything north of where ever I am is up North, south is Down South. It doesn't make any difference, I could be in Portsmouth and London would be classed as up North..

I’m in Stoke and, if asked to choose North or South, I would say I was a Northerner without hesitation.

Well we live in Yorkshire (Leeds) and I'd say we are in the North. Yorkshire is probably Southern North

I'm from Northumberland (North North) and dh is from Staffordshire which was South to me but Midlands to him.
