Advice on sub core for monoblock drive please

Hi there

I hope someone may be able to give some advice. I’m getting the old tar drive ripped up & replaced with monoblock. The guy is breaking up bits of the tar with the excavator to use under 100mm of hardcore.

I’m getting mixed reviews on whether it’s ok to use old tar underneath. I’m think the broken up bits are fine but bits of solid tar that are 10” in diameter should probably be removed rather than squashed into the ground.

Is anyone a driveway installer who would know if this was common practice to do?

I’ve attached some pics to show the bits being crushed into the ground. I’ve put a UK5 ugg in the picture to show the scale of the pieces.

Cheers

Just spoken to OH (foreman groundworker). As long as the 100mm of type one/metal is well compacted then absolutely fine apparently.

It wouldn't be my choice but nothing wrong with it. Bear in mind no matter what weight goes on your new drive the 'mass' underneath will retain the same volume so it won't sag.

Phew, ok thanks for both for replying before we speak with the contractor tomorrow. It’s reassuring to get another opinion from people in the industry. You are both stars, thank you 🙏

Last question, do they need to use a whacked plate to compact the type 1 or will a mini jcb do the job just as well? And should there be a membrane put down before the type 1 goes on top to stop weeds?

Cheers

It would have to be a whacker plate, JCB wouldn’t do the job. OH is saying if it’s been dug out properly then no membrane required but he can’t tell for sure from the pictures although he’d assume given it’s been tarred there’s no top soil.

Unfortunately I met him about two years after paying someone to monoblock my drive .

Thanks cheekydeeky. There was top soil on the part of the garden being extended to make it a double drive but they need to be digging down enough anyway to take the old tar mix, hardcore, sand/blocks, so may not need the membrane then. Thank you’re OH please for his thoughts, I really appreciate it 👍
