17.06.2019 - San Diego

Travelling this time was DH (54) - driver/eater/moaner/petrol head/biker

Me (51) - navigator/planner/booker/spreadsheet creator/feeder

After a couple of chilled days we had an early start today for the 215 mile drive to San Diego. Breakfast was lovely if brief before checking out and getting on the road

We didn't get chance to see the USS Iowa earlier in the trip so the USS Midway was the main reason for today. It was pretty overcast this early

As soon as we got near LA the traffic got worse

After a couple of hours we drove into San Diego

We arrived near lunchtime at our final hotel of this trip. The Springhill Suites by Marriott £267 for one night. As a surprise I had booked a corner room overlooking the Midway

We parked up and left our cases with reception as we were way too early for check in, and walked to the harbour front where we found the Beach Hut Deli.

We sat outside in the sun

DH had a cheese steak

and I had a Beach BBQ

Delicious

The view was lovely too. San Diego had a lovely vibe to it.

At around 1pm we walked over the road to the Midway

Once we paid the $46 for 2 adult entry we went on in

We spent a good 4 hours exploring the Midway. It really was a fantastic experience and well worth travelling for. We had photo overload but here's some of our favourites

The views from the deck were wonderful

and a couple inside

DH waiting for his lunch

On the way out we bought the photo they take of you on the way in. It was $32.33 including tax, and tbh not worth the money.

We walked along the Embarcadero and bought tickets for a south harbour tour. $56

It was expensive, but it was a lovely cruise.

Such a wonderful experience, and the captain was very informative.

We made our way back to the hotel ready to crash for an hour, but our room still wasn't ready

Reception explained that the previous occupant had paid for a late check out and they had not cleaned the room. They gave us a refund of $50 and our choice of drinks from the bar which we drank on the first floor terrace whilst we waited

We eventually got into our room, and it was amazing. A huge room with a corner view of this

After an hour we decided to walk up to the Cheesecake Factory, which was about a 15 minute walk from the hotel.

Once seated DH had a burger and I had the selection of starters which included the burger egg rolls

With cheesecake to go

The walk back was in the dark

and the view from our room was incredible

Wow. Just writing today's report wore me out!

We loved San Diego - so much so we want to return one day. We saw so little of it, but enjoyed it a lot.
