There are a number gf things that you need to do to protect yourself when investing. If you follow them it is hard to lose.

As you say, diversification is key. Funds that represent the globe relative to their economy. Funds across all sectors. Equities and bonds/gilts. Maybe some property reits. Invest for the longer term - 7+ years. Never hold single shares (unless you get them at a huge discount from company schemes and then sell as soon and you are allows - don't be greedy and try and hold them). Have enough cash so that you are never forced to sell in a down period. Most down periods recover in 18 months - even the bad ones
Follow the simple rules and you will do very well from investments when savings are rubbish.

I won £25 in August. It was so exciting getting the email from Ernie. For the 2 minutes it took to log in to my account, I mentally had the most amazing holiday planned! ☺️

I finally got round to buying some bonds and received an email this morning saying I am a winner! I have won £75 in the first month!
