Gulf coast- where to stay?

Tearing up all my 2021 plans and going to do something different for 2022... hopefully
Plan is fly into Key West for 2 to 3 days, then Miami Beach for 2 days and then...

... somewhere on the gulf...

Any suggestions?

We will probably fly out of Orlando and spend a few days there before we go.

We would like somewhere where there is loads to do not just lie on a beach.

I was looking at Naples, for example, but the villas there are out of our price range which tops out at about £160/170 per night.

Any suggestions?

Timing: It will be Easter which I know is premium pricing and busy with spring break but hey ho.

Perhaps you may get more suggestions if this was in the Accomodation thread - I placed a similar request there recently for Anna Maria Island and had some great ideas from other members of the Dibb. Good luck.

Cape Coral gives you easy access to Sanibel and Pine Island. Boca Grande is about an hour to 90 minutes away. The Dolphin cruise in Estero is well worth the trip as id the Edison Ford Estate. If you're interested, you can even catch the Key West Express to Key West on a high speed catamaran.

Oh I like the sound of the catamaran trip.
Where does it leave from?

I've noticed as well that due to the geographic layout with all the little spits and peninsulas that some places take a long time to get to.

Tea, it leaves from Fort Myers beach at 08:00 and gets back around 21:00.

I think its via Philadelphia, Barry, with American. The other option is via Atlanta with Delta.

Have a look at Tampa. We flew back from Key West to Tampa and BA fly direct to Tampa. If the weather had been good it would have been a spectacular flight. Sadly not - see last day of my trip report below! It was an experience though and I'd do it again.

Park shore resort Naples is an alternative it’s central loads of places to shop and eat and close to beaches .
We had a two bedroom apartment and it was huge we closed off half of it !
Full kitchen parking right outside and the pool and hot tub were very clean and plenty big enough .
They also have a guest laundry on site .
Booking direct is usually a decent price and gives you more range to request different rooms .
I think ours was German owned as most of the books in the Lounge were in German it was definitely well looked after .
