The sizes are the same but for example in Ralph Lauren we always go up a size for our DD. ie she is a stock size age 4 in the UK but we would by age 5 there.

Buy bigger our grandaughters are not fat by any means although both are tall but I do find things like pyjamas very skinny in the legs.

We usually buy a couple of years up in size.

Generally you would buy a size 8 for someone who is a 12 in the UK. Two sizes down from your size in the UK. But just as here sizes vary. I have bought anything from a 6 to a 10 over there and I'm a size 12. I am very wary of buying clothing over there for adults.

I too would be wary buying for adults stores like Aeropostale. abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister are tiny sizes.

Agree about Aeropostale..they come up very small... but ideal as presents...

My daughter didn't have an issue with A&F and Hollister as much as Aeropostale
