we have booked with a travel agent
i see today directly with virgin there is a difference of £120 between economy and PE for the return leg of our journey. I rang travel agent who said she would look into it

has anyone ever done this before? what do you think the possibility of getting this is? only for return journey as going out is approx £500pp to upgrade

I found a similar situation a few years ago where I'd booked Economy ticket several months beforehand but shortly before departure the price difference between Eco and PE was really low and so rang my travel agent. It was during that conversation that I received a lesson on airline seat buckets. It turned out the fee to upgrade my ticket was going to be enormous because the small difference had emerged due to increasing Eco fares working no their way up through higher fare buckets as the economy cabin filed up and reaching near PE fare prices. I however was sitting on a very cheap bucket Economy ticket purchased months earlier meaning the actual difference between what I paid for my Economy ticket and the price if PE was still forbiddingly high.

In short the upgrade cost will be based around what you paid for your Economy ticket, not the difference in price between Eco and PE prices right now.
