It was like this at Portofino Bay a few weeks ago as well. Staff there said the whole Fotl process is changing so there was no point in repairing the photo machines when they failed. They didn't know what the changes would be though.

Yup then you get a text to say your room is ready , just go to reception where they will activate your room key

This happened to us on our stay at rpr on 15/16 august and at hrh on 22/23 Aug

When we checked in we were told it was the start of a new process they are introducting facial recognition where you will get your photo taken at your first ride and then it will compare you to your picture
They were doing a trial in Spider-Man on the day we were there

When we stayed in August we each got our own key which also acted as FOLP access to club lounge and had charging rights

We checked in on 17th August and had the grainy photos and pretty much every time one wouldn't work when scanned and we said at the time how much easier it all was at Disney with one magic band instead of a room key and card for entry into park and then a 3rd express pass...

Agree. Hopefully Universal have something in the pipeline like the brilliant magicband at WDW. They are a few years behind the curve on this one. Been rumoured for years since Disney introduced theirs but it seems it's just wishful thinking - like this post...
