Bayous to Beaches.Oct 19. Day 6 Its a Family Affair. Baton Rouge
Sunday 6 October
Yesterday is HERE As a reminder, we are now into the non Florida leg of this trip. We will return to the sunshine state in a week’s time. Yesterday we drove from New Orleans to Shreveport via Natchitoches and Gibsland. Today we are heading back to Baton Rouge. We were both awake early again at 5 even though the bed was super comfy. This gave me plenty of time to make sure that I made use of all the fab facilities so it was all the lotions and potions with the super jacuzzi bath and swanning around in the fluffy robe making very nice coffees. All very luxurious. I then had the daily dose of suitcase faff. This time getting them ready for the next leg of the road trip and the flight tomorrow. We headed for breakfast at 9 it was quite basic but included in the price and very quiet. The selection of cream cheeses was amazing. We were slightly delayed setting off to meet my uncle as Andy was still trying to sort out the bank transfer and being 9 am Sunday morning in the US, it was proving really hard to get anywhere. Our problem now was that we were trying to stop or reverse the payment. Danny had contacted us and the shipping cost was so eye wateringly high it was almost the same as the cost of the paintings themselves so we had agreed to leave it for this trip and cancel the order. Of course by now the international payment was already underway. Oh deary me. We finally set off for the short trip at 1030 and then had a lovely couple of hours with my Uncle and his wife, chatting, looking at photos and he gave us a crash course in understanding NFL while we watched the start of the Saints Game. It was also especially poignant as today would have been my Gran's birthday so it felt all the more special to be seeing him today of all days. All too soon it was time for us to get on the road again. We said our goodbyes and headed off to the local Maccy Ds. Eesh this was an unfriendly place - the customers and employees alike were quite surly . So I didn’t stop long. Just enough to order a bite to eat and try and check in for our flight. Despite paying for early boarding, we had already been assigned to Group B which is most definitely not the priority boarding group so that had been a useless pre payment then! We took the interstate back to Baton Rouge so it was quicker but less scenic than our trip through bayou parishes yesterday Grand Bayou Lots of road Happily the traffic all going the other way More cotton fields Then more water We stopped a couple of times for fuel and to get some drinks. Andy was still suffering with this cough. Maybe even a bit car crazy The way the roads had been constructed over the bayous was really neat Almost at Baton Rouge its that bridge again And the LSU stadium Around 4.30 we arrived in Baton Rouge. First impressions of the hotel was that it was very nice - its been a historic landmark in the city for many years - being close to the capitol buildings its had a long history of politicians staying here We dropped our cases in the room - we had asked for a river view which we had plus the A/C units as well. I had one last important task here - Baton Rouge had been another of my Dad’s favourite places so today we were going to scatter the ashes that had been on their travels with us. Back in the UK we had scattered his ashes off the South coast and the plan today was to do the same in the Mississippi - I kind of hope someday his ashes will meet themselves in the middle of the ocean. We set off to the river front. We had just missed an LSU event in the square next to the hotel We passed the Old state capitol - this is now a political museum but was shut by the time we arrived which was a shame. It had been the original parliament building and looks beautiful from their website picture. The cost of building it had caused Mark Twain to be quite barbed about it at the time. It was really lovely at the river - they had piped music along the front and we chose a spot that was near the USS Kidd and directly opposite the union jack. Dad was very proud his Air Force service so we felt this was a really fitting spot. The sun was shining on the river and it was so peaceful. I was really pleased to have brought him back here one last time and collected a couple of shells to pop back into the container to take home. It was a huge relief - it had been quite a worry transporting the ashes around for the last week so it was good that we had got them here safely. We carried on walking along the riverfront enjoying the evening sunshine. We headed back to the bar. We had a club room but as it was the weekend the exec lounge was closed so we had been vouchers that gave us a couple of complimentary drinks and an appetiser I had the Growing Payne. Super refreshing . Elderflower liquer, grapefruit juice and champagne $10 Andy used the vouchers for a couple of beers Then we had mini crawfish pies Yummy. We had a nice couple of hours chatting to the bartender before heading out to Dinner at Stroubes The first thing is, it’s pronounced Stru-bees. Which is why we struggled to get anyone to understand where we were after as I was saying it in a very English Way more like Strobes and it was confusing people . We finally found I had a strawberry smash (strawberry vodka, soda, lime juice and fresh basil) Andy had red wine. I could just post a link to the menu but persist in these dreadful pics The bread had a Parmesan and garlic salt crust. Yummy but made us super thirsty. We shared the egg rolls. Delicious spicy little blighters. I had the filet with mash, Andy had the rib eye. I also ordered bearnaise sauce. Unfortunately the mash was cold so we sent it back and I had to ask for my sauce . The steaks were cooked perfectly but were half eaten before the mash re appeared. It did let the meal down. I finished with an amaretto creme brûlée. Very nice. Creamy but not too heavy. The bill ... expensive for a main course that wasn’t spot on. We came away feeling that the food was tasty but not outstanding and not worth that price tag with the hiccup on the mains. A bit disappointed. It was a short stroll back to the hotel and we didn’t bother with a nightcap as we needed to be up at a reasonable time tomorrow to beat the traffic back into New Orleans and our flight back to Florida - ready to begin our road trip up to Georgia and South Carolina …. which is HERE Today's cocktail tally: 2 Holiday tally so far : 12

What a fitting way to remember your dad.
The saga of the paintings rumbles on! I bet Andy won’t be rushing to buy any in the future 🤣 What a shame about the meal - expensive for cold mash and no sauce!

How lovely to be able to do that for your Dad xxx
Shame your meal was a disappointment- it’s always worse if you’ve paid a lot for it. And cold mash is unacceptable!

I had a bad feeling the paintings weren’t going to end well...
A lovely day though with some different and yummy sounding cocktails. Hugs and good thoughts on your dad’s tribute xxx

Thank you. Definitely a case of live and learn in the art world
It was a shame about the meal as what we had was very tasty but not quite worthy of the bill ! Hello, happy new year. All good here - hope same with you, thanks for reading along Ha ha , the paintings - still another week to go on that front It was a nice day and I am pleased it all went without a hitch on the ashes front. I didn't realise how much of a responsibility it had felt until it was done !

What a lovely day, and a perfect tribute to your Dad, it must have been very emotional. Lovely that you also managed to spend time with your uncle.

Great way to start the day meeting your uncle for a catch up. The water front in Baton Rouge looks a nice place for a wander. Lovely spot to place your Dad's ashes too, I'm glad that went well for you.
It's a shame you were let down a bit by the evening meal. The food does look nice, but bad service can certainly spoil the experience. I hope you get the art situation sorted out soon, it seems to be casting a bit of a shadow having to find time to phone the bank every day.

Thank you. The waterfront was so peaceful. It was the perfect spot.
The meal was a let down. It was all very delicious but at those prices you do expect everything to be “just so” don’t you Yes. The daily bank call was a pain in the bum.
