We just did 2 nights last time before catching the AMTRAC down to DC for a further 2 then flying to Florida. It was our first NY visit and It worked really well. We wished it had been 3 in each though!
We stayed at the Hilton in times Sq and walked Broadway, lower Central Park, 5th and home on the first evening. Next day was a river trip, financial area and ground zero, 'top of the rock' and back to times Sq. Next day it was down by foot to Penn station and away. Next year we return and for 3 nights at the Broadway Plaza after catching the AMTRAC down from 3 in Boston and later going on to Dayton (3) then Florida (13). We are doing first evening, A walk on Brooklyn Bridge, CBGB (I know it is now a clothes shop), then a meal in Katz (Meg Ryan in 'When Harry met Sally'). Next day, Hose Station no8 (Ghostbusters building), 9/11 Museum and possibly USS Intrepid. Hoping to fit in Grand Central Station also. Next day, Up Lower Broadway, 5th to see Macy and Tiffany before the rest of the day in Central Park. Return late evening for hopefully a night time Empire State visit. Next morning, yellow cab to Laguardia and fly onwards towards Dayton. We believe that between those two visits (5 nights total including 2 getting ins and 2 getting outs), we will have seen all that we really must see... (but everyone of course has different interests and agendas) To answer your question (and remember I am a country boy with no liking of Cities), 3/4 Nights would seem the ideal number of nights. Whilst Britain tends to be a little 'Londoncentric' for tourists on a schedule, the USA seems to have very widely dispersed attractions and therefore is not 'NY centric'. IMHO, there is plenty to justify trips to San Francisco, LA, DC , Chicago, New Orleans, Boston, Williamsburg etc etc etc, rather than expect to see most of it in one city. (We also need a further 2 full days in DC, but that can wait!).

Did 3 nights on my first trip in 2009. Crammed so much in and it was amazing. Very doable with a plan. We're hoping to go back next year 5 nights minimum.

I would do three nights, but I have been lots of times before. I wouldn’t do three nights for a first trip, I would want minimum of five.
