New England Road Trip – Day 8 – Billings Farm Museum Vermont

New England Road Trip – Day 8 – Billings Farm Museum Vermont

We woke to a very hot morning and dressed accordingly.

The D Hotel offered a buffet breakfast in its small breakfast area just above the lobby. It was very nice.

We were very sad not to be spending longer at this hotel but we have one of our longer drives today so we set off straight after breakfast.

The original plan was to visit the Yankee Candle Village but as we had done this yesterday we headed off to Vermont and the Billings Farm Museum. It took about 2 hours to drive to and is the halfway point of today’s travel.

As we started to see mountains around us we realised that the outside temperature had dropped significantly and we hoped that our t-shirts and shorts would be warm enough (we added fleeces and cagoules later!)

When we were nearly at our destination the satnav directed us through a wooden bridge and down a rather narrow lane for quite some way.

We eventually arrived at the Farm Museum. It was much bigger than I expected with interesting exhibitions of farm life, animals to learn about and the farm manager’s house all set up in Victorian style. The house was state-of-the-art when it was built in 1870 with gadgets galore.

Once again there were interesting guides. We spent some time walking around the farm and fields. There was also an exhibition room with a large display of modern patchwork quilts.

Before we left we watched a short film about the history of the farm (it would have made more sense to watch this when we arrived.) The only thing that would have improved this place would have been a decent sized café.

It was also lovely to be surrounded by trees and mountains instead of the coastal views we’d had for the past week.

We decided to find somewhere to eat on the next part of our journey to Lincoln.

The satnav once again took us an interesting route through some very isolated hamlets and we were nearly at Lincoln before we found somewhere to stop.

We had booked a fairly basic hotel and after our Hojo experience I was a little worried about it, but it was charming, rustic and well cared for. I really liked it. I also really liked being in the mountains.

We were really shattered today so had a quiet evening of card games before heading out to buy sandwiches from a nearby Subway.

We’re here for two nights and the weather reports suggest rain for the whole weekend. 
