New England Road Trip - Day 10 McAuliffe-Shephard Discovery Center and Nubble Lighthouse

Sunday 19th August

It’s Day 10 of our trip and it is the day that we traditionally get a bit tetchy with each other. So it probably wasn’t the most sensible day to plan a hotel move but that is exactly what we are doing.

The sun was shining as we left the mountains behind us – it was a sham we weren’t staying for another day.

We drove to Concord NH where we visited the McAuliffe-Shephard Discovery Center. It is a small space and science centre which was very interesting to visit. (On the way in we drove over a dead skunk and then worried that it might make the car smelly – it didn’t.)

We paid about $11 each admissions then an extra $4 for a planetarium presentation. It would be an amazing place for children to visit but strangely there were very few children when we were there (perhaps the local children visit with school trips). In a way it was nicer without the children as we didn’t feel guilty taking time to use the equipment and no one was rushing us off our seats. We spent a couple of hours here and I nearly fell asleep in the warm, dark, comfy planetarium – much to DH’s amusement.

We then had a late lunch at a nearby Olive Garden – nice but not as good as the one in Hyannis.

It was then a 90 minute drive to our hotel/guesthouse at York Beach.

Our Satnav took us down a quiet road that got narrower and narrower before becoming a dirt track with lots of “No Trespassing" Signs. We’d come so far that we ploughed on hoping that it would actually come out somewhere. Luckily it very soon came to a proper road and a few minutes later we were at the hotel.

The parking was a bit hit and miss but we were lucky and got the final space. (The people after us had to go back to the road.)

I’d booked the hotel via Expedia because of its location and was a little surprised that we were basically in a huge self catering room. It would have been nice to spend time there when our children were younger. But we appreciated having a sofa and chairs to relax on.

It was a 15 minute walk to the Nubble Lighthouse. We decided the walk would be good for us and we didn’t want to lose our spot in the car park. This was a good move too as the car park at the lighthouse viewing point was overfull and we wouldn’t have got a space anyway. Once again I was bowled over by the scenery. The lighthouse is on its own little island. The sea was quite choppy near the rocks and the sky was blue – beautiful.

We then walked into the town to get some tea but being Sunday a lot of places were closed. It was getting late now and as we approached the seafront we could hear a band playing jazz. Normally I hate jazz music but on this warm, late summer’s evening in the USA it was just right.

We ended up buying fish sandwiches and sitting on the seafront to eat them. After quite a tetchy day it was a perfect and calm way to end the day.

Tomorrow we head for Boston, return the car and have a city break before returning home.
