Would an air purifier help? Something to pull and trap the smell rather than add another scent on top.
My mum and dad’s house was the same, they were both heavy smokers and whenever I visited after getting married and moving out I was super sensitive to the smell and would always come away with headache. When my mum passed away suddenly 15 years ago I kept one of her cardigans which I kept tied up in a plastic bag as it had her distinctive smell of cigarettes plus the perfume she always wore.

I can remember when many people smoked and you could inside restaurants, pubs etc. I was a social smoker. I would smoke on an evening out . I gave up 10 years ago and it was the best thing I did. Do e-cigarettes smell and could that be a suggestion ? I don’t have anyone in our family that smoke but I know of going into someone’s home and it smells of cats. It puts me off visiting. I’m a clean freak and people have to take their shoes off when they come to mine.

Air purifiers only work to a certain point, smoke gets into everything.
My Sister is a chain smoker, I have to shower and chuck my clothes in the wash when I’ve seen her. I’ve been today to put some new light fittings up in her lounge, the old ones are brown and sticky with nictotine 🤢, despite being only a few years old. They are nice lights, too good to throw away, made of glass/metal and will go nicely in my DD’s hall way so I’ve sprayed the shades with degreaser and showered them off, the water was the colour of toffee. My late FiL’s house was similar when he died, everything in the kitchen/diner coated in thick brown residue, took us weeks to clean the walls/doors and ceiling, even inside the kitchen cupboards. Smokers won’t accept that smoking makes them and their homes stink. |

We moved into a house which was old fashioned and smelt of smoke. We decorated upstairs before we moved in but even the fresh paint and new carpets didn't take the smell away. My dds bedroom is what was the main bedroom and even now, 7 years later I go in and it smells disgusting. Overall the house is better but it's taken many years and lots of decorating. When I speak to the old lady next door (detached from us) I can tell if she has her door open as all I can smell in the air is cigarette smoke.
