Mobile Hard shell or soft shell cases?

Do you prefer the hard shell cases or the soft ones and why?

I've never had soft shell cases and I never will after seeing the state of my son in laws clothes after our luggage got totally soaked by a rain storm!

Hard shell all the way! I LOVE my Tripp cases I wouldn't be brave enough to put fragile items into my hold luggage if it were a soft shell, knowing how much they are thrown around by baggage handlers!

We have the ultra lightweight hard shell. Really like them. Firm enough to protect stuff, expandable and waterproof. Lovely bright colours too so they can be seen on carousels.

Samsonite hard shell case. My one is around 15 years old and has been all over the world with me on business and pleasure flights. It’s scraped scratched, a couple of dings, and is on its third set of wheels ( done under lifetime warranty ) .
The inside and the locking mechanisms are still perfect.
Initially expensive, but has paid its way and I reckon I’ll still get another 10 years out of it.

I love the look of the hard shell but when they first came out I got a couple, used them once, it got dented and scuffed, it must have been dropped from the plane😃😃So it put me off.
I have used soft ever since and brought alcohol and fragile stuff and never had a problem yet (hope I've not just jinxed myself)
Also prefer a soft cabin case as I like a pocket on front😆

Hard shell. I learnt my lesson with the soft shell ones. A storm started as they were putting everyones luggage on the plane so they had to abandon it. So my case was outside for 2 hours in pouring rain, everything was drenched
